After the overwhelming success of “Ted Lasso,” Apple TV+ has announced its intentions to stream another sports series, this one starring Owen Wilson.
According to a story at The Hollywood Reporter, the former star of “Wedding Crashers” and “The Royal Tenenbaums” will play the role of a washed-up golf pro who is looking to mentor a young player.
Wilson is a known golf fan who has appeared at multiple PGA Tour events through the years.
According to THR’s story:
Wilson will play Pryce Cahill, whose golf career ended prematurely 20 years ago. After he gets fired from his job at a sporting goods store in Indiana and his wife leaves him, Pryce sees a troubled 17-year-old golf phenom as his way back.
The series seems to echo Ted Lasso in its sports-world setting and the possibility of a redemption arc for its main character. It will join a comedy roster at Apple TV+ that also includes Shrinking, Platonic, Loot and the upcoming Palm Royale.
Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris (Fleishman Is in Trouble, Little Miss Sunshine) are set to direct the series. They’ll also be executive producers along with (Jason) Keller and Wilson; Ben Silverman, Howard T. Owens and Rodney Ferrell of Propagate Content; Guymon Casady of Entertainment 360; Lee Eisenberg and Natalie Sandy of Piece of Work; and Chris Moynihan.
Wilson is coming off season two of Loki at Disney+ and will next star in the thriller Lips Like Sugar with Woody Harrelson. His other recent credits include feature films Paint, Haunted Mansion and Secret Headquarters.
Wilson is repped by UTA and attorney Bob Wallerstein at Hirsch Wallerstein. Keller is repped by CAA and Entertainment 360. Dayton and Faris are repped by UTA and Sloane Offer.
