PALM CITY, Fla. – The No. 3-ranked Vanderbilt men’s golf team concluded the first day of the 2024 Valspar Collegiate Invitational in a tie for third, as the Commodores carded 3-under 565 through the first two rounds of play.

Vandy posted round scores of 279-286 at the Floridian National Golf Club on Monday. The Dores ended Round 1 in first place after 5-under 279. Vanderbilt heads into Round 3 of the Valspar Invitational in a tie with Arizona State, as both teams sit seven strokes off the lead.

“It was a long, tough day out there today,” said Vanderbilt men’s golf head coach Scott Limbaugh. “The wind blew hard, and the course provided a great test. I’m pleased with the way we battled and fought all day long. There were a lot of really good things and also a lot of things we can do better. We had some guys play with a lot of toughness and focus, which is great to see. The challenge is to get everyone doing that and that will be the goal for tomorrow. You have to embrace it when things are difficult and keep a strong mindset, which isn’t easy to do. I’m excited to see all five of our guys embrace doing that tomorrow and compete to our standard.”

Graduate student Matthew Riedel concluded the first day of the 2024 Valspar Collegiate Invitational in a tie for 10th on the player leaderboard to lead the Commodores. The Houston, Texas, native finished at 2-under 140 through 36 holes of play, posting round scores of 69-71. Riedel collected a team-best eight birdies and shot par on 23 holes on Monday.

Graduate student William Moll collected eagles on Holes 13 and 15, both a par-5, to help him end Round 2 of the Valspar Collegiate Invitational at 1-under 70. The Houston, Texas, native carded 72-70 during the tournament’s first day and he heads into Round 3 in a tie for 19th at even par 142.

Juniors Gordon Sargent and Jackson Van Paris completed Day 1 of the Valspar Collegiate in a tie for 27th, as each golfer carded 2-over 144. Sargent posted Vanderbilt’s best 18-hole score of the day, as the Birmingham, Alabama, native went 3-under 68 in Round 1. Van Paris held the team’s best score in Round 2, as he carded 2-under 69. The Pinehurst, North Carolina, native finished 2-under on the par-5 Hole 6 and collected five birdies during his final round of play on Monday.
