East Lansing, Mich. – Michigan State’s men’s golf team shot a 1-over par 289 in the second round and is in fourth place among 11 teams after the first day of play at the inaugural Bridgestone Collegiate Invitational, being played at Silverado Country Club in Napa, Calif.
The two-day, 54-hole tournament is part of the PGA Tour’s Pathway to Progression in collaboration with the Golf Coaches Association of America and co-host, Central Michigan University.
The Spartans finished the first two rounds with a 36-hole score of 9-over par 585 (296-289).
Brigham Young leads the field at 11-under par 565 (280-285), with Sam Houston in second place at even-par 576, followed by North Alabama in third place at 8-over par, the Spartans in fourth place and Elon and Nihon round out the top-five teams at 11-over par 587.
Junior Ashton McCulloch leads the Spartans, standing in fifth place in the field of 63 golfers at 3-under par 141 (72-69). McCulloch fired a 3-under par 69 in the second round, including four birdies.
Senior Bradley Smithson shot a 3-over par 147 (77-70) and is tied for 19th place. After an opening round 5-over par 77, Smithson came back with a 2-under par 70.
Graduate Drew Hackett is one shot back, tied for 23rd place at 4-over par 148 (73-75) and senior August Meekhof is tied for 34th place at 6-over par 150 (75-75).
Freshman Lucas Acevedo is tied for 40th place at 7-over par 150 (76-75).
The Spartans will tee off starting at 1:20 p.m. (ET), playing alongside Elon and Nihon.
The event features top-level NCAA Division I men’s golf programs and historically Black colleges and universities in addition to four high-ranking individual golfers from underrepresented communities. The Spartans are part of a field that features three HBCU men’s golf teams, with the individual winner earning an exemption into a 2024 Korn Ferry Tour event to be announced at a later date.
