AUGUSTA, Ga. — The Augusta National Women’s Amateur finished on Saturday afternoon, with four Stanford Cardinal vying for the top spot in one of the most prestigious events in the country. Playing historic Augusta National proved to be challenging for the Cardinal, who battled through 18 holes to land a pair in the top-20.
Megha Ganne tied for the best finish among the Stanford crew with a 70-74-76-220 for the week, finishing 4-over through three rounds. That finished put her in a tie for 20th overall in her second appearance in the final round of the Augusta National Women’s Amateur. She struggled early to the tune of 4-over through just five holes, but then settled into the round and fired off three birdies the rest of the way to shoot the par over her final 13 holes.
Joining her at 4-over for the week was incoming Cardinal Andrea Revuelta (72-74-74-220), who impressed the field on Saturday with the best round of any Cardinal at 2-over. She was battling for a top-10 spot halfway through the round, holding even at par on the front nine, before two bogeys and one birdie finished her round on the back nine. In her first appearance at the Augusta National Women’s Amateur, Revuelta showed she will be a major player in this event for the next few years.
Paula Martin Sampedro was also making a play for the top-10 on the back nine during the final round. The freshman from Spain was even through 13 and had vaulted up to 11th on the leaderboard before finishing the round with a 4-over 76, capping off her ANWA appearance with a 72-73-76-221. She settled in at 24th on the leaderboard.
Rounding out the Stanford group was Nora Sundberg, who will be joining the Cardinal next fall. Sundberg was in up there with the leaders in the first round but couldn’t find her footing during the final round at Augusta. She was able to birdie on 13, but that was her lone hole under par during the final round, ending her invitational with a 70-75-78-223, finishing 28th in the field.
Bailey Shoemaker (-8), a sophomore at Florida State, was crowned the champion of the Augusta National Women’s Amateur after firing a 3-under 69 in the final round. She beat out Bailey Shoemaker (-7) of USC and Ingrid Lindblad (-4) of LSU.
Stanford returns to action as a team for the Pac-12 Championships in Pullman, Washington on April 21-23.
