East Lansing, Mich. – Four players finished among the top-20 overall and Michigan State’s men’s golf team tied for second place among 15 teams at the Hoosier Collegiate Invitational, played at the Pfau Course on the campus of Indiana University in Bloomington, Ind.
The teams completed the second round on Sunday morning before continuing with the third and final round after Saturday’s opening day was delayed by 90 minutes due to frost. The 15-team field battled wind gusts that ranged from 15 to 30 miles per hour during the final round.
The Spartans posted a 9-over par 293 in the final round, the second-best team score of the day, and finished in a tie for second with Notre Dame at 32-over par 884 (295-296-293).
Indiana won the tournament with a 15-over par 867 (291-287-289), while the Spartans and Notre Dame were 17 shots back at 32-over par 884. IUPUI finished in fourth place at 43-over par 895 and Southern Illinois rounded out the top-five teams at 45-over par 897.
Junior Ashton McCulloch was the top finisher for the Spartans, tying for eighth place at 6-over par 217 (73-74-72). McCulloch’s even-par 72 was the team’s best round of the day.
Senior August Meekhof shot a 2-over par 74 in the final round and finished in 12th place at 7-over par 220 (72-74-74).
The other top-20 finishers for the Spartans were graduate students Drew Hackett and Bradley Smithson, who tied for 19th place at 10-over par 223. Hackett shot a 1-over par 73 in the final round to close out his weekend (74-76-73). Smithson, meanwhile, finished his second round on Sunday morning with an even-par 72 and shot a 4-over par 75 in the third round.
Freshman Lorenzo Pinili finished in a tie for 49th place at 18-over par 231 (80-77-74).
Senior Pierce Morrissey, playing as an individual, tied for 75th place at 28-over par 241 (82-76-83).
Michigan State closes out the regular season at the Illini Spring Invite on Saturday, April 20 and Sunday, April 21 at Atkins Golf Club in Champaign, Ill.
