NAPA, Calif. – No. 14 Arizona Women’s Golf carded a 6-over par round on Tuesday at the Chevron Silverado Showdown to move up to second place. The Wildcats recorded the third-lowest round of the day out of the 16-team field as graduate senior Gile Bite Starkute and junior Carolina Melgrati each carded the fifth lowest score among all players in the second round with even par rounds of 72. Melgrati and fellow junior Lilas Pinthier both sit in a tie for fifth place on the individual leaderboards at even par entering Wednesday third and final round.
“We were able to keep our focus and determination today as the course played very, very difficult,” said head coach Laura Ianello. “As the going got tough today, this team rose to the occasion and moved up the leaderboards. It was a testament to our entire team of young ladies who continue to show their resiliency and maturation. We have put ourselves in a great place after two rounds, and if we keep that composure, we will be right where we want to be when it’s all said and done.”
Arizona trails the USC Trojans by nine strokes but hold a two-stroke advantage over Northwestern in the team standings after Tuesday’s second round where not a single team broke par. USC and Arizona continue their strong play on the par 5’s as the tournament’s top two teams in par-5 scoring average.
Melgrati and Pinthier are part of a six-way tie for fifth place at even par after 36 holes. They trail co-leaders, Kajsa Arwefjall of San Jose State and Catherine Park of USC, by five strokes. Should the two leading Wildcats finish in the top 10, it would mark the second such finish of the season for Pinthier and a career-best fourth consecutive top-10 finish for Melgrati.
The Cats will tee off at 8:30 a.m. (MST) on Wednesday off the first hole alongside USC, Northwestern and Pepperdine.
