Escobar, Filler Lead Gators in Opening Round of SEC Championship

BELLEAIR, Fla. – The Florida women’s golf team was led by Marina Escobar and Maisie Filler on day one of the SEC Championship on Friday at Pelican Golf Club.

The Gators posted a team score of 288 (+8) and are tied for 9th with Alabama and Vanderbilt. The trio will tee off tomorrow at 9:10 a.m. on hole 10. South Carolina leads through 18 holes behind a 5-under mark.

Escobar led the lineup with a 2-under 68 in the opening round of the postseason. In all four SEC Championship appearances, she has shot under par in round one; 71 (-1) in 2023, 67 (-5) in 2022 and 70 (-2) in 2021. The 5th-year senior made the turn bogey-free at -2 and was tied for the lead with Maisie Filler behind birdies on 11 and 15 to get to -4. Escboar sits tied for 6th and two shots off the lead with an average of 2.75 (-1) on par3s. 

Filler recorded a 1-under 69 and was one of 18 golfers to shoot under par in the first round. She had a stretch of six birdies across five holes from holes 7-12. The senior owns a mark of 3.92 (-1) on par4s and is T12.

The next best score came from Inès Archer with a 73 (+3). The freshman is tied for 35th in her first career postseason appearance. 

UF’s final two rounds came from Jackie Lucena’s 78 (+8) and Paula Francisco’s 79 (+9).

Following three rounds of stroke play, the top-8 teams will advance to match play.
