Augusta National Golf Club giveth, and Augusta National Golf Club taketh away.
Most of the memories golf fans have of the Masters are the eagles, the chip-ins, the highest of highs. But the course can rear its head and bite back, creating the lowest of lows.
Ernie Els once needed six putts on the first green and was 6 over just 15 minutes into his round in 2016. Tiger Woods posted a 10 on 12 after the 15-time major champion hit three balls in Rae’s Creek in the heart of Augusta National’s Amen Corner.
The highest score recorded on a single hole at the Masters is a 13, which has happened three times.
What’s the highest score on each of the holes? We have the full rundown here.

In 2016, Ernie Els posted a 9 on the opening hole after famously six-putting from 3 feet. Originally, it was reported that he needed seven putts and made a 10, but hours later that was changed, and erased the names of four golfers – Olin Browne, Scott Simpson, Billy Casper and Jeev Milkha Singh, who all recorded an 8 there – from the Masters media guide.

The second hole at Augusta is a par 5 that has produced two 10s over the years: Sam Byrd in 1948 and David Duval in 2006. Byrd would go on to shoot an 84, while Duval was 19 over on his first 20 holes en route to an 84 of his own. On the second hole, he hooked his drive, took two drops and hit two trees, a hazard stake and a bunker.

The 1980 tournament will be remembered for Seve Ballesteros’ first Masters title. He won by four but he stretched his lead to 10 through the first nine holes of his final round.
That same tournament also holds the distinction of the 8 recorded by Douglas B. Clarke on the third hole.
Clarke was a two-time San Diego County Junior Golfer of the Year and the nation’s No. 1 golf recruit who signed with Stanford in 1977. He was a member of the victorious 1979 U.S. Walker Cup team.
