PHOENIX, Ariz. (April 13, 2024) – Washington State men’s golf ended its final day at The Thunderbird Saturday afternoon with a three-round score of 10-over, 862 to finish in 14th place among the 17-team field.
The Cougs concluded round two at 6-over 290 and followed that up with a 5-over, 289 round-three score.
Sophomore Sam Renner finished the tournament at 1-under, 212 to tie for 25th place. In round two he parred seven straight holes to start and then recorded a pair of birdies and bogeys before a double-bogey on his final hole put him at 2-over 73 for the round. In the final round he quicky went 2-under after five holes before three bogeys and two more birdies the rest of the way helped him to a 1-under, 70.
Fifth year Pono Yanagi finished in a tie for 52nd at a 3-over, 216. He finished round two at 3-over, 74 behind three birdies, six bogeys and nine holes for par. In round three he opened on a bogey but then collected a pair of birdies to be at 1-under through six holes. Later, sitting 1-over, he parred eight of his final nine holes, with the one exception being a birdie on hole two to finish at an even 71.
Senior Drayton Joseph wrapped up The Thunderbird at 4-over, 217 tied for 58th. He had a strong second round with a team-best five birdies, including two on the front nine and three on the back nine, to go with five bogeys and eight parred holes for an even round-two score of 72. After going 1-under after three holes in the third round, a double-bogey on his fourth hole put him at 1-over. He stayed there over the next 10 holes as he shot for par on each of them before another couple of bogeys and a birdie on his final hole had him at 2-over, 73.
Senior Preston Bebich ended tied for 75th place at 7-over, 220. He put up three bogeys and a birdie on the front nine to sit 2-over at the turn, before shooting a birdie, a bogey and a double-bogey on the back nine to finish round two at 4-over, 75. His third round saw him scatter five bogeys over his first 17 holes, before a birdie on his last hole to make him 4-over, 75.
Redshirt freshman Ben Borgida also placed tied for 75th at 7-over, 220. In round two he birdied his opening hole on his way to an even-par front nine, and then scattered two bogeys and a birdie the rest of the way for a 1-over, 72 round two.
