PULLMAN, Wash. (April 21, 2024) – Washington State women’s golf finished day one of the 2024 Women’s Golf Pac-12 Championships in third place among the 11-team field, at 9-over, 297 after a windy Sunday at the par-72 Palouse Ridge Golf Club.
“Today’s conditions with strong winds, sometimes gusts and cool temperatures, made it very challenging on the course” said Head Coach Sofie Aagard. “This team did a great job in keeping the ball in play and not losing strokes while losing balls. We also were able to take advantage of the downwind holes and make a good amount of birdies. The greens were firming up as the winds dried them up, making approach shots more challenging. The Pac-12 championship is incredibly strong as always and we are looking forward to the next two days of competition.”
Junior Madelyn Gamble got off to an excellent start with a 2-under, 70 to finish the round tied for first. A birdie on two and a pair of bogeys put her 1-over at the turn, before an incredible back nine with four birdies on holes 10, 14, 15 and 17 to just one bogey led to a 3-under back nine and a 2-under round.
Junior Sarah Skovgaard-Bils had a 2-over, 74 showing to sit tied for 13th on day one. She bogeyed hole five and then birdied hole seven to sit even through nine holes. While she added one more birdie on 17, a stretch of bogeys on holes 11, 12 and 13 led to a strong 2-over finish.
Sophomore Hannah Harrison sits at 3-over, 75 in a tie for 17th. She birdied hole two in between five front nine bogeys, putting her 4-over after nine. She used a 1-under, 35 over her last nine holes, though, with three birdies and two bogeys to move to 3-over for the round.
Junior Emily Cadwell ended day one tied for 42nd at 6-over, 78. She struggled to find consistency early on, scattering a birdie, three bogeys and a triple-bogey to go 5-over on the front nine. But she settled in a bit in the latter part of the day with birdies on holes 10, 13 and 18 among a few more birdies for a 1-over back nine and a 6-over finish.
Freshman Alice Johansson went 8-over 80 on day one and is in 48th. She sat 3-over with a trio of bogeys on the front nine before securing a birdie on hole 10. But two bogeys and two double-bogeys down the stretch put her at 8-over on the day.
The Cougars will continue with days two and three of the 2024 Pac-12 Women’s Golf Championships on Monday and Tuesday.
