As someone who has had my fair share of protein golf snacks, I was excited to try the new Protein Balls from the St. Andrews Bakery. Each bag contains 6 protein balls which feature a smorgasbord of good, natural ingredients and as a result you get a boost in high-quality proteins as well as vitamins like D3 and B12 – all of which are ideal for helping you maintain that energy throughout your round. (As someone who often starts to flag from the 14th hole, this was music to my ears).
As the packaging shows the flavor is salted caramel but I didn’t think it was overly sweet, and I was pleased to see no artificial sweeteners have been added, nor added sugars. It is worth saying that these do contain almonds and cashews, and may contain traces of other nuts so best to avoid if you have a nut allergy, but they are gluten free as well. To be totally honest the only negative I could think of is that only 6 balls come in every pack, but from looking around online, you can often get larger boxes of them – for example I found one retailer that sells boxes of 10 bags!
But don’t just take my word for how delicious these snacks are, because on a recent testing day I got some samples for the entire Golf Monthly team to try and below is the feedback they gave.

Anything that is salted caramel normally gets my vote and this was no exception. Great tasting and gave me a good energy boost but without the crash of sugar laden snacks like chocolate and flapjacks. I’m not a great one for eating a lot during a round and I really hate anything that makes my hands messy/greasy so these balls ticked both those boxes. I liked the fact that the packet gives you 6 mini servings making it easy to have one ball every few holes. Only negative is that they are dangerously moreish!
Genuinely filling. Didn’t have that weird dry, powdery protein mouthfeel that some snacks like this have. Nice flavor without being too sweet.

These were absolutely beautiful. The taste and texture was spot on, and I would have demolished another bag or two if there were any more around! They…
