WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The No. 1-seed Vanderbilt men’s golf team ended Monday’s opening round of the 2024 NCAA West Lafayette Regional in first place, as the Commodores carded 11-under 277.

The Dores set the Kampen-Cosler Course record for the lowest team score at an NCAA event after Vanderbilt finished Round 1 of the 2024 NCAA West Lafayette Regional at 11-under. The Commodores hold a four-stroke lead over second-place Arizona going into Tuesday’s second round. Vandy led Round 1 in par-3 (-1), par-4 (-2), and par-5 (-7) scoring, while the Dores collected a field-best 61 pars and 20 birdies on Monday.

“We got out to a great start,” said Vanderbilt men’s golf head coach Scott Limbaugh. “This is the NCAA Regionals and you need to put your best foot forward. It’s so important for the guys to trust their training and I feel like we’ve trained well. It’s all about trusting yourself and your teammates at this point and staying patient out there. I thought we did a really good job at that today.”

A quartet of Vanderbilt golfers finished Round 1 of the 2024 NCAA West Lafayette Regional inside the top 10 on the player leaderboard, led by junior Gordon Sargent who finished in a tie for second.

“It’s great to see Gordon finishing like he did with birdies on Holes 17 and 18, which are probably the two hardest holes on the golf course,” said Limbaugh. “He hit a flop-shot in the hole on 18, which was pretty cool. I thought it was big for us to have everybody in the round all day long. Jackson Van Paris played without a bogey and was solid and steady. Matthew and William, two of our upperclassmen, looked comfortable out on the course throughout the round. The way Cole responded after his double-bogey with four birdies in a row says a lot about who he is and I’m super proud of him.”

Sargent briefly held the Kampen-Cosler Course record for the lowest 18-hole score at 5-under 67. He was passed later in the day by Wisconsin’s Cameron Huss, who later carded 6-under 66 to end the round in first place. Sargent goes into Tuesday’s Round 2 in second place, just one stroke off the lead. The All-American capped off Round 1 by making a 25-yard chip shot to post a birdie on Hole 18. Sargent collected six pars in the first round, tying him for the team lead in Round 1 with senior Cole Sherwood.

Sherwood concluded Round 1 in a tie for third after he finished the day at 3-under 69. After posting a double bogey on Hole 12, Sherwood…
