Two Rounds Down - Stanford University Athletics

STANFORD, Calif. – Stanford will play the final 18 holes of NCAA Regionals with its season on the line, as the Cardinal fell three strokes below the cut line in Tuesday’s second round with a 4-over 284.

Senior Karl Vilips posted the Cardinal’s best round of the afternoon, shaving one shot off yesterday’s effort for a 1-under 69. After a slow start that including 3-over stretch through three holes, Vilips strung together a team-leading five birdies to finish one stroke below par.

After three bogeys on holes 2, 8, and 10, Michael Thorbjornsen carded a pair of birdies in the final three holes to register a second-round 71 and stay within reach of the leaders. Sitting at 4-under through 36 holes, the senior will start tomorrow’s final trip around Stanford Golf Course five strokes behind the leaders.

Barclay Brown and Jake-Beber Frankel finished with identical scorecards for the second consecutive round, both finishing day two with 2-over 72 rounds. Ethan Gao improved upon Monday’s effort by one stroke, turning in a 4-over 74 scorecard as Stanford’s non-scoring round.

Final round of play resumes tomorrow morning at 8 a.m. PT with trips to the NCAA Men’s Championships in Carlsbad, Calif., on the line. The top five teams will automatically qualify for the NCAA tournament, in addition to the top-scoring individual on a non-advancing team. Stanford will be paired with Ole Miss and SMU.
