DURHAM – Duke women’s golf head coach Dan Brooks has been tabbed one of 24 selections on the Division I Jackie Steinmann Women’s Golf Coaches Association (WGCA) Coach of the Year Watch List, which is presented by Golf Pride.
Brooks, who is in his 40th season with the Blue Devils, has guided Duke to the NCAA Championship this week for the 34th time in program history. A seven-time National Coach of the Year selection, Brooks has led Duke to the NCAA Championship in 24 out of the last 27 years (2020 the event was canceled).
Heading into this week’s action at the Omni La Costa Resort & Spa in Carlsbad, Calif., Brooks and the Blue Devils have won two tournaments – Landfall Tradition and Florida State Match-Up – and finished runner-up at the Old Barnwell Match Play and NCAA Cle Elum Regional. Currently ranked No. 9 nationally, Duke has collected the second-lowest stroke average in school history with a 72.51 ledger.
The Blue Devils have turned in some impressive numbers this season including turning in a school-record-tying 17-under, 271, in the final round at the Landfall Tradition to come-from-behind and win the title. As a team, Duke’s 21-under, 843, was the third-lowest 54-hole ledger on a par-72 course in program history.
Duke was even more impressive in the Florida State Match-Up producing the second-lowest 54-hole score in school history with a 30-under, 834. In the second round, the Blue Devils carded a school-record 24-under, 264, which was the third-lowest score in NCAA history. Freshman Katie Li took home the individual title with a 12-under, 204.
At the NCAA Regional last week, Duke was the only school at six sites to feature all five golfers finish in the top-20 of the event.
