CARLSBAD, Calif. – No. 7 USC women’s golf made up some major ground at the second round of the NCAA Championship, as it moved ten spots to the 11th spot, by going five-under par and pushing its team total to six-over par on Saturday, May 18 on the La Costa Champions Course at the La Costa Resort & Spa.
The Trojans rank 11th in the field after the second round, as they sit five strokes ahead of the first cut tomorrow. Texas A&M leads the field at 11-under par.
USC’s best round of the day came curtesy of freshman Bailey Shoemaker. Shoemaker moved up 82 spots, as she found her grove by carding a 69 (-3) on day two. The freshman used a back-to-back-to-back birdie streak to start the back nine to push her forwards, as she ended up with six birdies, one bogey and one double-bogey on the afternoon. Shoemaker now is three-over for the tournament is tied for 50th.
Sophomore Catherine Park continued to be one of the most prolific players as she went two-under par (70). This was her 23rd round of par or better on the season, which breaks the USC single season record previously set by Annie Park (2014). Park etched her name in the history books by posting three birdies and just one bogey. The sophomore is tied for 23rd as she sits at one-under par after the first two days.
Following Park was junior Amari Avery. Avery is two-back of the Trojans leader, as she is one-over par and is tied for 37th. Avery posted one of the more up and down rounds, as she only pared two holes on the back nine. In total Avery had six birdies, four bogeys and one double bogey, as she carded an Even 72.
Senior Brianna Navarrosa is currently tied with Shoemaker at 50th as she is also three-over par. Navarrosa was Even for the day, as she was one-over par on the front nine and one-under par on the back nine. The senior used a birdie on hole No. 18 to help push her to Even before finishing up her second round.
The last scorer for USC is junior Xin (Cindy) Kou. Kou put up a highlight moment as she put in a near forty-foot putt for birdie on hole No. 18. The junior ended up three-over on the afternoon, as she is now nine-over par and is tied for 112th after round two.
Senior Christine Wang is set to replace Kou at the No. 5 spot ahead of day three.
