CARLSBAD, Calif. – The Virginia women’s golf team shot 19-over 307 during the second round of the NCAA Golf Championships in Carlsbad, Calif., finishing the round in 29th place at 32-over 608. Following Sunday’s third round of stroke play, the field will be cut to the top 15 teams for the fourth round of stroke play. After the fourth round, the top eight teams will advance to match play.
Amanda Sambach once again led UVA in scoring, shooting 3-over 75 on the Omni La Costa Resort’s North Course. After an opening-hole bogey, she made birdies on three of her next four holes to get to 2-under par. A triple bogey on her sixth hole put her at 1-over par which is where she finished her front nine. A pair of bogeys on the back nine contributed to her final score. For 36 holes, Sambach stands in 45th place at 2-over 146.
The Cavaliers’ Celeste Valinho shot 77 and stands in 112th place at 9-over 153. Megan Propeck had a score of 76 and is in 119th place at 154. Rebecca Skoler is 135th at 156 and Jaclyn LaHa is 148th at 159.
Texas A&M shot 4-under to grab the overall lead at 11-under 565. The Aggies’ Adela Cernousek leads stroke play at 8-under 136.
UVA will start its third round at 1:50 p.m. PT from the first tee while paired with Purdue and SMU. Live scoring is online at Golfstat.com.
Virginia is making its 14th NCAA Championships appearance in the 21-year history of the program. UVA’s best finishes at the NCAAs were back-to-back fourth-place showings in 2011 and 2012. Last season the Cavaliers were in 24th place after 54 holes and did not advance to the final round of stroke play.
