CARLSBAD, Calif. – The Florida men’s golf team completed round two of the NCAA National Championship at Omni La Costa on Saturday with a round two score of 302 (+14) to sit T12 and three shots above the top-15 cut tomorrow.
Following tomorrow’s round three of stroke play, the top-15 teams will advance to the final round of stroke play to crown an individual champion. After the final round of stroke play, the top-8 advance to match play as UF is nine shots back of the top-8 currently.
Tied with Tennessee and Texas, the Volunteers have the first tiebreaker of cumulative total of non-counting scores with 155. Both the Gators and Longhorns have a mark of 159 resulting in the second tiebreaker scenario of cumulative total of the lowest player score from each round with UF at 142 and UT 144.
UF is set to tee off round three at 11:30 a.m. ET and are paired with Texas and Stanford (15, +22), going off hole one to round out the morning wave.
The Gators look to advance to the fourth round of stroke play for the sixth time in program history and fourth under head coach J.C. Deacon. It would mark the third consecutive season reaching the final 18 as the match play format was added in 2009.
Freshman Jack Turner leads the Gators with a 36-hole score of 2-over 146. Tied for 22nd, he owned the low round in the lineup today behind a 1-over 73. After 2-over in the first four holes, he had an 11-hole stretch of bogey-free 3-under. Turner also earned PING All-Region honors prior to teeing off the round.
Both improving three-shots in their second set of 18 holes was Ian Gilligan with a 75 (+3) and Matthew Kress at 78 (+6). Gilligan had a stretch of three consecutive birdies on holes 2-4 and also collected all-region accolades, the second in his career.
One stroke back of Turner is 5th-year senior John DuBois at 3-over 147. He had a round two of 78 (+6) and is T27. Behind DuBois at T67 is sophomore Parker Bell at 7-over 154 as he shot a second round of 76 (+4).
