CARLSBAD, Calif. – The No. 2-ranked Vanderbilt men’s golf team held onto third place at the 2024 NCAA Championships at the end of three rounds of play, as the Commodores carded 2-over 290 on Sunday to make the cut and move onto Round 4.

Vandy again got off to a hot start on the front nine in Round 3 of the 2024 NCAA Men’s Golf Championships, as the Dores sat at 3-under at the turn. The back nine on the North Course at Omni La Costa Resort and Spa once again pushed the Commodores, but Vanderbilt maintained third place on the team leaderboard at the end of the day with a 54-hole total of 9-over 873. The Dores are one of 15 teams that advance to the final round of stroke play on Monday.

“I like where we are and how our guys battled,” said Vanderbilt men’s golf head coach Scott Limbaugh. “Everybody was competing in the round today, but I thought we lost a little focus. We got away from being tough in some moments and tried to force some things. This course doesn’t reward that. I’m really proud of Gordon for how he played. Golfers like him are worth their weight in gold on days like today.”

Junior Gordon Sargent finished under par for the second-straight day, as he carded 2-under 70 in Round 3. The Birmingham, Alabama, native moved up three spots on the player leaderboard on Sunday and sits in a tie for fourth at 2-under 214 through three rounds. Sargent heads into the final day of stroke play at the 2024 NCAA Championships three shots off the lead.

“I feel like I carried the momentum from yesterday over and stuck to my game plan,” said Sargent of his performance on Sunday. “I’m really just hitting it well and hitting my spots. I didn’t necessarily make a lot of putts, but stress-free pars are always good out here. It was another solid round that helped the team out a little bit, and I’ll keep that game plan for tomorrow.”

Jackson Van Paris heads into Round 4 in a tie for 18th after carding 2-over 74 on Sunday. The junior had to endure a triple-bogey on Hole 15, but the All-SEC second team selection recovered with three-straight birdies to close out Round 3. Van Paris goes into Monday at 2-over 218. Graduate student Matthew Riedel matched Van Paris’ performance by going 2-over 74 on Sunday. The Houston, Texas, native is currently tied for 40th at 6-over 222.

Senior Cole Sherwood holds a three-round total of 4-over 220, which puts him in a tie for 27th. Sherwood and graduate student William Moll each carded 1-over…
