ST. SIMONS ISLAND, Ga. – Behind back-to-back rounds in the 60s to close action in St. Simons Island, Ga., Duke women’s golf rising junior Andie Smith turned in a tied for third-place finish at the Sea Island Women’s Amateur, which was contested at the Sea Island Golf Club Seaside Course.
Competing in the event for the third straight year, Smith collected her best finish to date, after placing tied for fifth and tied for sixth the previous two appearances.
Smith, who hails from Hobe Sound, Fla., had a solid start to the tournament on Wednesday as she was 1-under-par through the opening nine holes, but struggled to finish and signed for a 79. In round two, Smith turned in the best round of the tournament as she was 5-under-par through her opening eight holes and finished with a 5-under, 70, to jump up the leaderboard.
On Friday in the final round, Smith had early birdies on No. 1 and No. 4, before making the turn at even par. She added a birdie on the 14th hole as she played her final nine holes at 1-under to finish with a 1-under, 69.
Smith closed the event with a 1-under, 209, while Anabelle Pancake won the individual title with a 6-under, 204.
Duke rising senior Rylie Heflin also carded a tied for 17th finish with rounds of 72, 71 and 71 for a 4-over, 214. Heflin, a native of Avondale, Pa., notched seven birdies over the 54 holes. It marked Heflin’s second straight top-17 finish in the tournament as she placed tied for sixth a year ago.
