Johnston, Menne Receive Pac-12's Tom Hansen Conference Medal

TEMPERyggs Johnston (men’s golf) and Ashley Menne (women’s golf) are the 2023-24 Pac-12 Tom Hansen Medal award winners for Arizona State, the conference announced Monday.

The honor is given annually to an outstanding senior male and female student-athlete from each of the conference’s 12 institutions based on the exhibition of the greatest combination of performance and achievement in scholarship, athletics and leadership.

Conference medal winners have been named every year since the 1960-61 academic year. In 2009, the Pac-12 renamed the award the Tom Hansen Conference Medal in honor of Hansen, who retired at the end of June 2009 after serving for 26 years as Commissioner of the Pac-10. This is the first time since 2017 and only the second time ever that the Sun Devil Golf programs have received both medals of honor.

Ryggs Johnston becomes the seventh medal winner from Sun Devil Men’s Golf, the first since Jared du Toit received the honor in 2017. He joins program greats Niklas Lemke, Alejandro Canizares, Chris Hanell, Todd Dempsey, and Jim Carter in earning this distinction.

Ashley Menne is the fourth medal winner from the Sun Devil Women’s Golf program, the first since Olivia Mehaffey won in 2021. Other ASU women’s golfers to win the award include 2017 NCAA Champion Monica Vaughn (2017) and All-American Tracy Cone (1994).

Ryggs Johnston – who closed his career with four straight top-10 finishes — finished his five years as a Sun Devil with third-team All-America honors in 2024, as he helped lead the Sun Devils to the 2024 Pac-12 title. Johnston also earned third-team honors in 2021, highlighted by his third-place finish at the NCAA Championships. The Montana native had 14 career top-10 finishes and earned first-team All-Pac-12 honors twice (2024 and 2021) and second-team honors in 2022. He became the second Sun Devil men’s golfer to earn the Pac-12 Scholar-Athlete of the Year in 2022-23 as he graduated in May of 2023 with his management degree and a certificate in sports business and then earned ASU’s Bill Kajikawa Award in 2023-24, given to a senior student-athlete based on academic excellence, athletic accomplishment, leadership and service in the community.
