Tosti will represent Argentina and Villegas Colombia as the duo will be the first Florida men’s golfers to compete in the Olympics joining UF golfers Sandra Gal (Germany, 2016) and Marife Torres (Puerto Rico, 2020).
This summer’s competition marks the fifth time golf has been featured as an Olympic sport and just the third time since 1904 in St. Louis.
To qualify for the games, golfers competed in a two-year qualification period, which ended with the top-60 qualifiers earning a spot at Le Golf National from August 1-4.
The top-15 players in the OWGR (Official World Golf Ranking) are eligible for the Olympic Games, up to a maximum of four golfers from a single country as the United States is the only country with more than two qualifiers in the 60-player field. After the top 15, the Olympic Golf Rankings (OGR) consist of up to the top two eligible players per country, as long as that country does not already have at least two players in the top-15. The host country – France – was guaranteed at least one spot, as is each of the five continents of the Olympics
The women’s Olympic golf ranking will be finalized on June 24 following the conclusion of this week’s KPMG Women’s PGA Championship.
The International Golf Federation (IGF) will publish a finalized list for both the men’s and women’s golf competitions on July 2.
