Summer Notebook: Sample Shines at British Amateur; Greyserman Makes U.S. Open Cut

DURHAM – Duke men’s golfers are into the summer months, with current and former players representing the Blue Devils at amateur events and the U.S. Open.

Greyserman Makes Cut, Kim Competes as Amateur at U.S. Open

The 124th U.S. Open was held at Pinehurst No. 2 in mid-June and included Duke representation in the form of Max Greyserman and Bryan Kim. Greyserman made the cut for the first time at the U.S. Open in just his second start at the major, while Kim – the youngest player in the field – narrowly missed the cut by just one shot after a strong effort through the first two rounds of play.

Greyserman finished at 5-over, 285, surging in the final round with a 2-under, 68, earning a tie for 21st overall. His under-par round was one of just 13 on the course on Sunday, as he closed with three birdies across his final five holes to move inside the top-25.

Kim, who earned his spot in the U.S. Open by winning the U.S. Junior Amateur in July of 2023, nearly made the cut as the youngest player in the field and in his first start at the major. The rising sophomore went out in 2-over, 72, in the first round with birdies on both par-5’s and hung tough through the second round with birdies on holes No. 13 and 2 but burnt the edge on a 70-foot birdie putt on his last hole of the round, No. 9, to finish at 6-over, 146.

Evans and Chinn Start Summer at Sunnehanna Amateur

Rising junior Ethan Evans and rising senior Kelly Chinn were both in the field at the Sunnehanna Amateur, the first event of the 2024 Elite Amateur Golf Series (EAGS). Created to challenge the best in amateur golf, the EAGS comprises of seven events that make up the Men’s Series, with the goal of enhancing amateur golf and providing exemptions into USGA Championships, PGA TOUR and Korn Ferry Tour events to the top finishers.

Both Evans and Chinn made the cut at the Sunnehanna, with Evans logging a tie for fifth and Chinn finishing tied for 51st overall. Evans finished under-par in all four rounds en route to a 9-under, 271, while Chinn signed for a round of par or better twice and ended the event at 2-over, 282.

Evans’ strongest day of the event was in the third round, as he rolled in five birdies with just one bogey to card a 4-under, 66. Chinn’s under-par round of 1-under, 69, in the first round was spurred on by three consecutive birdies on the back-nine.
