DURHAM – Recent Duke women’s golf graduate Emma McMyler and rising junior Andie Smith carded solid finishes this week as they competed in two different events.
McMyler advanced to the finals of the 103rd Women’s Texas Amateur at the Spanish Oaks Golf Club in Austin, Texas. A two-time champion in the event in 2022 and 2021, McMyler opened action by carding an even-par, 71, in stroke-play qualifying, which tied for eighth overall.
She earned the No. 8 seed and faced No. 25 seed Federica Tavelli-Westerlund in the round of 32 of match play. McMyler, who hails from San Antonio, Texas, collected a 3&2 victory to advance. That same afternoon, McMyler notched a 2&1 win against Jordan Karrh to move on to the quarterfinals.
In a match that went to 20 holes against Tillie Claggett, McMyler moved in into the semis. McMyler fell behind early by one hole to Maelynn Kim in the semifinals, but evened the match on hole No. 4 and never looked back winning 4&2.
McMyler faced Grace Jin in the finals. Jin won the first hole and led 2UP through 11 holes, before McMyler started making a comeback. After winning holes No. 12 and No. 15, the match was tied. Jin won hole No. 17 and both golfers parred No. 18 to give the title to Jin.
Smith, who hails from Hobe Sound, Fla., competed in the North & South Women’s Amateur on the Pinehurst No. 2 and No. 8 courses in Pinehurst, N.C. In stroke play qualifying, Smith turned in rounds of 73 and 72 to finish tied for ninth.
Earning the No. 10 seed, Smith faced No. 23 seed Kynadie Adams in the round of 32 of match play. Smith fell behind early, but regrouped and took control to win 5&4. In her round of 16 match versus Molly Smith, the Duke standout had a tight match, before winning holes No. 16 and No. 17 to win 2&1.
Smith faced No. 15 seed Lynn Lim in the quarterfinals, but couldn’t keep her run going and fell 3&2.
Rising senior Rylie Heflin also competed in the North & South Amateur, but missed the cut with rounds of 78 and 76.
