NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame honored Vanderbilt men’s golfer Gordon Sargent over the weekend as the 2024 TSHF Co-Male Amateur Athlete of the Year.

Sargent shared the honor with Tennessee men’s basketball player Dalton Knecht, as both were recognized at last Saturday’s Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame Induction Banquet at the Omni Nashville Downtown.

Sargent is the first Vanderbilt golfer since 2005 to be named TSHF Male Amateur Athlete of the Year, while he is the third Commodore golfer to earn the distinction, joining Brand Snedeker (2004) and Luke List (2005). Overall, Sargent is the eighth Vandy student-athlete selected as TSHF Male Amateur Athlete of the Year and the first since baseball’s Jack Leiter in 2022.

The 2022 NCAA individual championship nearly claimed a second title at the 2024 NCAA Men’s Golf Championship, as Sargent posted a runner-up finish, where he carded 2-under 286. The Birmingham, Alabama, native finished the 2023-24 season with a 70.15 scoring average and carded under par in a team-best 23 rounds. He was the medalist at the 2024 Mason Rudolph Championship, becoming the second golfer to win back-to-back titles in the history of the event. Sargent posted a runner-up finish at the NCAA West Lafayette Regional and recorded six top-five finishes during the 2023-24 season.

Sargent was a finalist for the 2024 Ben Hogan and Haskins Awards for the second straight season. In addition, he was a GCAA first-team All-American for the third time in his career and an All-SEC first-team selection at the conclusion of the 2023-24 campaign. Sargent extended his school record for most career wins to six after earning medalist honors at the 2024 Mason Rudolph Championships at Vanderbilt Legends Club.

His efforts helped the Commodores advance to the NCAA Championships for the 10th consecutive year, picking up seven team titles this season. The Commodores advanced to match play for the seventh time in program history at the NCAA Men’s Golf Championships.

Last October, Sargent became the first golfer to earn their PGA TOUR card via the PGA TOUR University Accelerated program. In addition, Sargent represented the United States at the Walker Cup, World Amateur Team Championships, and the Arnold Palmer Cup. Additionally, the Vanderbilt senior participated in the 124th U.S. Open and The Open Championship at Royal Troon over the summer.
