Golf Mourns Former Coach Art DeBlasio

PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Rutgers Athletics mourns the passing of former men’s and women’s assistant golf coach Art DeBlasio.

Art DeBlasio served as the assistant coach for women’s golf under Jan Unger for many years, while holding the position of Head Golf Professional at the Rutgers Golf Course from 1966-2001. DeBlasio celebrates more than a half-century membership with the PGA.

“We send our deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of Art DeBlasio,” men’s golf’s head coach Rob Shutte said. “Art positively impacted the lives of countless members of our Rutgers golf family and alumni base through his 35 years as the head professional on the banks. Our program has risen to the level it is today because of the hardworking contributions of Rutgers golf legends like Art DeBlasio.”

“We are saddened to learn about Art DeBlasio’s passing,” women’s golf head coach Kari Williams said. “He played an integral role in supporting and developing both Rutgers golf teams, especially in the early years of the women’s program. We were fortunate to have spent time with Art in recent years at our annual golf outing and we always enjoyed celebrating the program’s success together at RUGC. We will miss Art and will continue to honor him through our annual Unger-DeBlasio golf outing.”

The Rutgers women’s golf program holds an annual Unger-Deblasio Cup to kick off each season on the banks. In 2023, women’s golf hosted its tenth annual event honoring the program, which started as an intercollegiate sport in 1977.
