CHASKA, Minn. – The 2024 U.S. Amateur begins on Monday, Aug. 12, and the Duke men’s golf program has five total representatives – including four members of the 2024-25 team.
This year’s championship, the 124th iteration of the event, is hosted at Hazeltine National Golf Club and is joined by stroke-play co-host course Chaska Town Course. The total field is made up of 312 competitors, with Duke’s entrants consisting of senior Luke Sample, juniors Ethan Evans and William Love, sophomore Bryan Kim and 2006 graduate Nate Smith.
Sample enters the event having made two strong starts at different amateur championships in Europe earlier this summer – a semifinal appearance at The Amateur Championship and a 12th-place finish at the European Amateur Championship. The senior debuted inside the preseason PGA TOUR University Top-25 rankings at the end of July and is making his third consecutive U.S. Amateur appearance.
Evans ended his 2023-24 collegiate season on a strong note, earning an individual spot in the NCAA Championship following a second-place showing at the Baton Rouge Regional. The junior made four starts this summer at Elite Amateur Golf Series events and has tallied a top-25 finish at all four, highlighted by a fifth-place, 9-under, 271, at the Sunnehanna Amateur. The Mercer Island, Wash., native is making his first U.S. Amateur start.
Kim is one of just 11 USGA Champions in the 2024 field following his victory at the 2023 U.S. Junior Amateur and is one of just 13 entrants who also played at Pinehurst No. 2 in the 2024 U.S. Open earlier this summer. The sophomore joins his teammate Sample with his third consecutive start at the U.S. Amateur.
Love logged three separate top-10 finishes during an injury-shortened sophomore season and highlighted his play this summer with a tie for fifth place at 7-under, 281, in the Georgia Amateur Championship. He is making his third career start at the U.S. Amateur.
Smith was a two-time All-American during his time at Duke before graduating as a part of the 2006 class. He took home his first professional victory in 2010, winning the 2010 WNB Golf Classic by two strokes as a part of the Nationwide Tour.
