Virginia Athletics | Four Hoos Set to Compete at 2024 US Amateur Championship

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Virginia men’s golfers Ben James, Bryan Lee, Deven Patel and Paul Chang open play at the U.S. Amateur Championship on Monday (Aug. 12) in Minnesota. The 312-player field will compete at Hazeltine National Golf Club and the Chaska Town Course in Chaska, Minn. Two rounds of stroke play will take place Monday and Tuesday before the field is cut to 64 players for match play. The tournament runs through Sunday.

This is the third consecutive year UVA has had at least three players in the field.

James is making his fourth U.S. Amateur appearance. Last year James and Chang were part of the field. Chang advanced to the round of 16 and James made it to the quarterfinals. In 2022, James placed ninth in stroke play and reached the Round of 32 in match play. He also played in the 2020 event but failed to make the cut during stroke play.

James is currently ranked No. 5 in the World Amateur Golf Rankings (as of Aug. 7), which makes him the fourth highest-ranked player in the field. He is one of 13 players in the competition who participated in the U.S. Open earlier this year.

James is set to tee off at 1:47 p.m. CDT from the 10th tee at Hazeltine National. Chang starts at 7:33 a.m. CDT from the 11st tee at Chaska Town, Patel starts his round at 1:36 p.m. CDT from the 10th tee at Hazeltine National while Lee begins play at 8:17 a.m. CDT from the 10th tee at Hazeltine National.

The U.S. Amateur will be broadcast on Peacock and Golf Channel starting Wednesday from 5-8 p.m. ET.
