Virginia Athletics | Chang Advances to Round of 32 in Match Play at US Amateur

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Virginia men’s golfer Paul Chang cruised to a 5&4 victory to advance to the Round of 32 at this year’s U.S. Amateur Championship at Hazeltine National Golf Club in Chaska, Minn. UVA teammate Ben James was eliminated from the tournament, dropping a 2&1 decision to Jose Luis Ballester. A former Arizona State golfer, Ballester won the 2023 European Amateur championship.

Chang won the first two holes in his match against former Iowa State golfer Nate McCoy and only lost one hole on his way to a lopsided victory. Up two, Chang strung together consecutive wins on holes, 9, 10 and 11 to effectively put the match away.

Chang will face Tyler Mawhinney during Wednesday’s Round of 32 action. They tee off at 10 a.m. ET. Mawhinney won the Canadian Amateur championship earlier this summer.

Last year Chang advanced to the round of 16 at the event.

The U.S. Amateur will be broadcast on Peacock and Golf Channel Thursday from 5-8 p.m. ET.

Complete tournament coverage is available at the USGA website.
