CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Former Virginia All-American golfer Lauren Coughlin has earned a spot on the United States team for the 2024 Solheim Cup. Coughlin’s win at last week’s ISPS Handa Women’s Scottish Open, her second win in a month span, clinched her spot. The victory allowed her to move into third place in the U.S. Solheim Cup Team points standings heading into the final qualifying event of the season, this week’s AIG Women’s Open.
The 2024 Solheim Cup will take place at the Robert Trent Jones Golf Club in Gainesville, Va. on Sept. 13-15. This biennial, transatlantic team match-play competition features the 12 best European players from the Ladies European Tour (LET) and the 12 best U.S. players from the Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) Tour.
Held every two years, the event has grown into the most highly coveted trophy in women’s professional golf team competition. The Solheim Cup is named in honor of Karsten and Louise Solheim, the founders of Karsten Manufacturing Corporation, which makes PING golf equipment.
The first Solheim Cup was staged in 1990. The U.S. Team currently holds a 10-8 advantage over Europe in Solheim Cup competition
In addition to Coughlin, other players who have mathematically clinched spots on the U.S. roster are Nelly Korda, Lelia Vu, Ally Ewing and Allisen Corpuz. The U.S. Team will comprise the top seven players in the U.S. Solheim Cup points standings, the top two players in the Rolex Women’s World Golf Rankings not already eligible, and three captain’s picks. The team will be finalized on Aug. 25, 2024, following the AIG Women’s Open.
