Herrington, who enters his freshman season on Rocky Top, is coming off a stellar summer of amateur golf in which he became the youngest Tennessee State Open winner, advanced to the Sweet 16 at the Western Amateur and made it to the Round of 32 at the U.S. Amateur.
In addition to becoming the youngest State Open winner in TGA history, the Dickson, Tennessee, native became the first amateur to win the event since 2018, as professionals had won nine of the past 10 tournaments.
“Obviously, he builds a whole lot of belief this summer with the results he had,” said head coach Brennan Webb. “(He) won the State Open, the youngest person to ever do that. Then, the make the Sweet 16 at the Western Amateur, which is probably the hardest amateur tournament in the world – to do that before you get on a college campus is pretty extraordinary.
“He’s got a whole bunch of belief. He’s got the mindset that he’s going to be a First Team All-American this year and dominate. That’s what we need.”
Herrington and the rest of the Vols are set to begin their season close to home at Tennessee National for the second annual Visit Knoxville Collegiate, running Friday, Sept. 6 through Sunday, Sept. 8.
