NICHOLASVILLE, Ky. (September 8, 2024) – Washington State Women’s Golf opened 2024-25 with a familiar face leading the way as senior Madelyn Gamble fired an opening round even par to sit in a tie for fifth after day one at the Bettie Lou Evans Invitational hosted by Kentucky.
The three-round 2024 Bettie Lou Evans Invitational is hosted by the University of Kentucky at Champion Trace at Keene Trace Golf Club in Nicholasville, Ky. and plays as a par-72 at 6,261 yards.
WSU finished the opening day tied for fifth with Missouri at +15 in the 11-team field and just one stroke behind Indiana for fourth.
Gamble posted a pair of birdies in her opening round and sits just two shots back of the leader while fellow senior Sarah Skovgaard Bils recorded a pair of birdies in her opening-round 74, four strokes behind the leader and in a tie for 12th. Sophomores Alice Johansson and Sara Piñeros each tallied a pair of birdies in their opening rounds while Johansson finished the first day in a tie for 24th.
“Our whole team fought hard today,” head coach Kevin Tucker said. “Madelyn and Sarah Bils were solid all day and they all put us in a good spot heading into the final 36 holes. This golf course hosts a PGA Tour event every year, so it is pretty demanding. We have to continue to stay patient throughout the round and commit to every golf shot.”
Monday’s second round play will start with tee times while Tuesday’s final round will have a shotgun start.
