Kono Leads Huskers on Opening Day in Wisconsin – University of Nebraska

Hannah Kono shot an opening-round 76 (+4) to lead the Nebraska women’s golf team on the first day at the Badger Invitational in Verona, Wis.

Kono, a sophomore from Enkoping, Sweden who is playing in her first tournament as a Husker, heads to Monday’s second round in 27th place.

Fifth-year Husker Andrea Velez added a 78 (+6) on the par-72, 6,306-yard layout at the University Ridge Golf Club. She ended the day in 38th, one shot ahead of sophomore teammate Arden Louchheim who is tied for 43rd at 79 (+7).

Senior Miu Takahashi and redshirt sophomore Lauren Thiele rounded out the Husker lineup with opening-round scores of 80 in a tie for 50th.

As a team, Nebraska sits in 11th place in the 13-team after a first-round total of 315 (+27) in the five-count-four scoring format.

UTSA owns the top spot on the team leaderboard with an opening-round 295 (+7), ahead of second-place Delaware (297) and third-place Rutgers (298). Yale sits one shot behind the Scarlet Knights in fourth (299), while the hosts from Wisconsin are tied with Sam Houston State for fifth at 300 (+12).

Lucrezia Rossettin from Rutgers and Sam Houston State’s Grace Jin fired Sunday’s best rounds with matching scores of 69 (-3). They own a one-stroke lead over Yale’s Mia Sessa, who closed the day at 70 (-2).

Action at Nebraska’s season-opening tournament continues in Wisconsin on Monday with tee times at 9 a.m. (CT). The tournament concludes with the final round on Tuesday.
