Spartans in Second Place Following First Round of the Folds of Honor Collegiate


East Lansing, Mich. – Paced by four players among the top-30 overall, Michigan State’s men’s golf team shot a 3-over 287 and is tied for second place among 15 teams after the first day of play at the third annual Folds of Honor Collegiate, being played at American Dunes.

Alabama leads the field at 9-under par 275, while the Spartans are tied for second place with Texas and Notre Dame at 3-over par 287. Illinois rounds out the top-five teams at 5-over par 290.

The Spartans were led by senior Ashton McCulloch, who is in second place alone at 3-under par 68. McCulloch played the front nine – his final nine holes of the day after starting at 10 – in 5-under par including three-straight birdies.

Freshman Julian Menser and junior transfer Caleb Bond both fired scores of 2-over par 73 and are tied for 17th place.

Sophomore Lorenzo Pinili shot a 3-over par 74 and is tied for 26th place and freshman Juan Velasquez shot a 10-over par 81 and is in 70th place.

The Spartans tee off on Tuesday at 8:18 a.m. on the first hole, playing alongside Texas and Navy.
