PULLMAN, Wash. – Washington State Men’s Golf posted a two-round score of 16-under-par, 552, completing the first day of play at the Palouse Collegiate tied for third at the par 71, 7302-yard Palouse Ridge Golf Club Tuesday.
The Cougars shot 10-under, 274 in the opening round and followed that with a 6-under 278 in the afternoon. Utah leads the field at 35-under, followed by Colorado at 26-under.
Individually, senior Franklin Lydra finished his first two rounds at 6-under, 136, tied for eighth overall`. Lydra opened the tournament with a 4-under, 67, followed by a 2-under, 69, in round 2. Lydra carded seven birdies on the day against just one bogey, which included a bogey-free second round. Lydra leads five Cougars who finished the day under par.
Redshirt-sophomore Ben Borgida ended his first 36 holes at 4-under, 138, tied for 20th overall. After opening the tournament with an even-par 71, Borgida college six birdies against two bogeys in round 2. Junior Sam Renner fired an opening-round 66 which included seven birdies before a two-over 73 in round 2. Renner’s two-round score of 3-under, 139, puts him tied for 28th.
Freshman Garrett Harrison, playing his first collegiate event, posted rounds of 71-70 for a 36 hole score of 1-under, 141. Harrison’s day included seven birdies and an eagle to finish tied for 37th entering Wednesday final round. Another Cougar freshman, Dylan Burcham, ended his first day at even-par 142, shotting rounds of 71-73. Burcham sits tied for 48th.
Three Cougars also competed as individuals, led by grad transfer Jakob Chicoyne who posted rounds of 71-70 for a first-day score of 1-under, 141, tied for 37th overall. Fifth-year senior Drayton Joseph recorded back-to-back rounds of even-par, 71, and is tied for 48th overall, while freshman Tate Bruggeman is tied for 70th after 36 holes after rounds of 74-71, putting him at 3-over.
The Cougars conclude play at the Palouse Collegiate Wednesday morning for a final 18 holes. Play begins at 7:45 a.m.
