FOOTS BAY, Ontario – The University of Notre Dame men’s golf team won the first edition of the Canadian Collegiate Invitational as the two-day tournament wrapped at the Öviinbyrd Golf Club Tuesday afternoon. The individual field was highlighted by three Top-15 finishes by the Irish men, including Nate Stevens’ 210 (-6) which tied for eighth overall and a team best.

“We have a team of fierce competitors who embrace pressure and when you combine that with their exceptional talent level, we compete at the highest level; which is the Notre Dame golf standard,” Director of Golf and Head Coach John Handrigan said.

The team sat securely in second place heading into the final round of competition, having played 36 holes on Monday and shooting -11 through the first two rounds.

“Competing in a college golf tournament in my hometown of Muskoka, Canada, is truly special,” Handrigan added. “And to win is a memory this team provided me that I’ll never forget.”

The team finished with a score of 847 (-17) to win the inaugural tournament by five strokes. The field consisted of 10 teams hailing from around North America, including both the USA and Canada.

Stevens, the team’s highest individual finisher shot a 73 (+1) in the opening round before registering the lowest score of the season to date of 67 (-5) in round two. His 70 (-2) in round three gave him the 210 (-6) final for an eighth-place finish.

Jacob Modleski was close behind his teammate, shooting a 211 (-5) through three rounds, including a pair of 70 scores (-2) in rounds one and two for an 11th-place finish.

Mike Qiu wrapped up the tournament with a score of 214 (-2) for 14th overall and Rocco Salvitti’s 215 (-1) was good for 19th-place. Chris Bagnall, who shot 72 (E) in round one, and a 71 (-1) in round two, finished at 217 (+1) for 23rd overall.

“The chemistry and culture of this team is elite. I’m thankful for all the players of the past eight years who have contributed to the strength and this culture, as that is why Notre Dame golf is successful. We compete for each other,” Handrigan continued. “I’ve learned from a good friend to always celebrate great accomplishments and we will do just that. However, one thing I know about this team – they are not content with just one win but are motivated for the next.”

The team will have a weekend off before returning to team competition Sept. 29-30 at the Windon Memorial Classic in Lake Forest, Illinois, hosted by…
