ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – USC men’s golf utilized a six-under-par second round to overcome first-round struggles, as it sits in ninth place out of 18, after two rounds at the William H. Tucker Invitational on Friday, Sept. 20, at the University of New Mexico Championship Course.
Junior Antonio Safa leads the charge in their second tournament, as he sits within the top 25 at one-under par. The junior remained consistent through the first two rounds, carding a 71-72 in 36 holes. Safa spent most of his first round trying to overcome a triple-bogey on hole No. 16, as he went four-under-par on the front side afterward.
In the early goings, the biggest mover of the day was sophomore Nicolas Dominguez. Dominguez carded a 74 (+2) in round one but started hot in round two, birding six of his first nine holes. That streak eventually slowed, as he bogeyed four more and had one double to finish the round at even par. Dominguez is tied for 36th alongside two of his teammates as senior Gavin Aurilia and sophomore Jack Jerge are all two-over par after two rounds.
Junior Jackson Rivera rounds out the lineup. Rivera tied for the best second-round from a Trojan with Jerge, carding a 69 (-3) after posting an 82 (+10) in the first round. In the individual section, freshman Jack Buchanan is tied for 61st at five-over par with a 75-74.
The Trojans remain six strokes out of fourth place as they search for their second top-half finish on the final day of the William H. Tucker Invitational starting at 7:45 a.m. MT tomorrow at the UNM Championship Course.
