SAN ANTONIO – The No. 4-ranked Vanderbilt men’s golf team has three golfers place inside the top 10 after 18 holes of play at the 2024 Valero Texas Collegiate, as the Commodores sit in a tie for fourth place.
Four Dores finished under par in Round 1 of the Valero Texas Collegiate. Senior Gordon Sargent carded a season-best 5-under 67 in Round 1 to end the day in a tie for fourth. Senior Jackson Van Paris and junior John Broderick each went 3-under 69 to conclude Round 1 in a tie for ninth. Sophomore Rowan Sullivan, who is playing as an individual in San Antonio, finished at 1-under 70 in the opening round and sits in a tie for 34th.
Vandy carded 9-under 279 in its opening round at TPC San Antonio. The Commodores head into Round 2 on Sunday in a tie four fourth on the team leaderboard with No. 3-ranked Virginia, while Vanderbilt is 11 strokes behind current leader No. 8 Oklahoma, who finished Round 1 at 20-under.
“I thought it was a solid start for us today,” said Vanderbilt men’s golf head coach Scott Limbaugh. “It was good to see Gordon get off to a good start, and I thought Jackson was steady all day. John did a great job staying calm early on when things weren’t going as well as he hoped, and he got rewarded for that patience. The course is a little softer this year, so we have to keep adjusting and adapting to the way it’s playing. I really loved how we hung in there and finished strong.”
Sargent came out of the gates hot in San Antonio. The 2022 NCAA individual champion collected an eagle on Hole 2 and added back-to-back birdies on Holes 4 and 5 to sit at 4-under through five holes. The three-time All-American made the turn at 3-under, then added two more birdies on his back nine to finish the round at a season-best 5-under 67. It is the 17th time that Sargent has carded 5-under or better in a round at Vanderbilt.
Broderick caught fire on his back nine in Round 1 of the Valero Texas Collegiate. The junior added three birdies over his final nine holes to finish the day at 3-under 69. Broderick has finished at par or better in all four rounds this season.
Van Paris sat at 1-over at the turn but finished at 4-under on his back nine to end Round 1 at 3-under 69. The senior collected an eagle on Hole 14 and added four birdies to his scorecard to head into Round 2 in a tie for ninth.
Junior Wells Williams and freshman Ryan Downes each shot 2-over 74 as they go into Round 2 in a tie for 57th on the player…
