Biermann Tied for Third, Michigan State in Fourth Following Two Rounds of the Mary Fossum Invitational


East Lansing, Mich. – Michigan State’s women’s golf team shot a two-round total of 6-over par 582 and is in fourth place among 15 teams after the first day of play at the 37th edition of the Mary Fossum Invitational, being played at Forest Akers West.

The two-day, 54-hole tournament will conclude on Monday morning, with an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start.

The Spartans shot a 2-over par 290 in the opening round and closed with a 4-over par 292 during a second round that was played in rain, including a steady downpour during most of the back nine.

Ole Miss fired a 14-under par 274 in the opening round and holds an 11-shot lead with a two-round total of 13-under par 563 (274-289). Minnesota is in second place at 2-under par 574, with Florida third at 5-over par 581 and the Spartans in fourth at 6-over par 582. Michigan rounds out the top-five teams at 13-over par 589.

Senior Caitlyn Macnab set a Forest Akers West course record, and a Mary Fossum Invitational historical record, by firing a 9-under par 63 in the opening round, besting the mark of 7-under par 65 set by Bailey Shoemaker of Southern California in the 2024 NCAA East Lansing Regional in May. Macnab leads the field at 8-under par 136 (63-73).

Senior Brooke Biermann leads the Spartans, tied for third place overall at 3-under par 141 (68-73). She fired a 4-under par 68 in the opening round and is just five shots off the lead.

Senior Katie Lu fired a 1-under par 71 in the second round, with five birdies on the back nine during the heavy rain, and is tied for 13th place at 1-over par 145 (74-71).

Sophomore Ana Sofia Murcia is tied for 24th place at 4-over par 148 (73-75), with a 1-over par 73 in the opening round.

Junior Taylor Kehoe is tied for 28th place at 5-over par 149 (75-74) and classmate Paula Balanzategui is tied for 32nd place at 6-over par 150 (76-74).

Four Spartans are playing as individuals, with freshman Catalina Monroy tied for 19th place at 3-over par 147 (71-76), including a 1-under par 71 in the opening round.

Senior Shannon Kennedy is tied for 41st place at 7-over par 151 (76-75), junior Amelie Weber is tied for 62nd place at 11-over par 155 (76-79) and sophomore Ella Weber is tied for 76th place at 16-over par 160 (79-81).

Michigan State begins play at 8:30 a.m., with golfers at holes No. 4 through 7, playing alongside Michigan and Miami.
