DURHAM, N.C. – The Duke men’s golf team is tied for first place following the first two rounds of action at the 2024 Rod Myers Invitational, played at the Duke University Golf Club. The Blue Devils used a 7-under second round en route to a 10-under, 566, score after 36 holes. Junior Ethan Evans leads the team at 8-under, 136, aided by a first-round, 7-under, 65, in the morning session.
HOW IT HAPPENED: ROUND ONE
- As a team, Duke fired a 3-under, 285, in the first round.
- Ethan Evans set the pace for Duke across the opening 18 holes, firing a bogey-free, 7-under, 65. The junior started fast, with three birdies across his first four holes, and took advantage of both front-nine par-5’s, adding birdies on No. 7 and No. 9, to make the turn at 5-under. Another birdie on the par-5 11th pushed Evans to 6-under before he rolled in six consecutive pars to hold steady atop the leaderboard. He finished strong with his seventh birdie of the round on the 18th and final hole of the morning.
- Daniel Choi and William Love both carded an even-par, 72, to start their tournament.
- Love started with two dropped shots in his first six holes but started to turn the tide with a birdie on the par-5 ninth. After making the turn, Love played his next five holes in 2-under, with three birdies and a lone bogey. A final dropped shot, on the par-4 17th, moved the junior back to even-par for the round.
- Choi began with a bogey before three consecutive birdies on holes No. 8-10 moved the junior to 2-under. Back-to-back dropped shots, on holes No. 14 and 15, leveled Choi back out to even-par, where he finished after closing with three straight pars.
- Bryan Kim started his tournament with a 4-over, 76, in the first round. The sophomore started with three consecutive bogeys and reached 4-over after faltering on the par-5 seventh. A birdie, on the par-5 ninth, was offset by a final bogey, on No. 13, en route to Kim’s 4-over opening round.
- Luke Sample started his day with two early birdies before eventually signing for a 5-over, 77, in the first round.
- Five individuals also competed for Duke.
- Kelly Chinn paced the individuals with a 1-under, 71, in the first round. John Peters shot a 5-over, 77, and the trio of Sam Mukherjee, Oliver Mukherjee and John Hiller all finished at 10-over, 82.
