Biermann Has Record-Setting Day as Spartans Finish in Second Place at the Mary Fossum Invitational


East Lansing, Mich. – Senior Brooke Biermann fired an 8-under par 64 in the final round and Michigan State’s women’s golf team posted the best team score of the day as the Spartans finished in second place among 15 teams at the Mary Fossum Invitational on Monday afternoon at Forest Akers West.

MSU shot an 8-under par 280 in the final round and finished the 2-day, 54-hole event at 2-under par 862 (290-292-280).

Ole Miss led from start to finish, topping the field with a tournament record 17-under par 847 (274-289-284). The Spartans were in second place, with Minnesota third (8-over par 872), Florida fourth (10-over par 874) and Miami rounded out the top-five teams (20-over par 884).

Final Results

“It was a pretty exciting day for me being able to follow one of your players who shoots a personal best and 64 is a great number so a really fun day,” MSU Head Coach Stacy Slobodnik-Stoll said. “Then watching the scores as everyone else on the team was playing well. Taylor (Kehoe) had a three under par, it was a good day, we beat some really good teams that we are happy to beat and just a springboard for what is coming up next which is the UNC tournament.”

Senior Caitlyn Macnab of Ole Miss was the individual champion, finishing at 12-under par 204 (63-73-68), a tournament record. Macnab set a tournament and a Forest Akers West Course record in Sunday’s first round with a 9-under par 63.

Biermann challenged that mark in the third round. Starting on the fourth hole, she parred the first four before birdies on the par-5, 495-yard eighth hole and the par-3, 184-yard ninth hole. That was the first of three-straight birdies and five in six-hole span. Biermann birdied the par-4, 372-yard third hole and fell just one shy of the lead.

She finished the third round with 8 birdies and an 8-under par 64, a personal best, the second-best 18-hole score in the history of the Mary Fossum Invitational and tied for the second-lowest 18-hole score in MSU history. Biermann led the Spartans, finishing in second place at 11-under par 205. Her score of 205 was a personal best, the second-best score in tournament history and tied for the third-lowest 54-hole tournament score in program history.

“If you can imagine, it’s pretty good,” Biermann said of shooting 64. “It was a pretty solid round, bogey free and birdies. I didn’t start off too great….
