Utah Golf Powers Into First Place Through Day One at The Tindall

SAMMAMISH, Wash. – The University of Utah Men’s Golf team continued its strong start to the season with a sizzling first two rounds of play at The Tindall on Monday, leading the field on the team leaderboard while Davis Johnson and Sergio Jimenez sit atop the player rankings.

“It was a great day,” said head coach Garrett Clegg. “Davis and Sergio were awesome today!  They played great golf all day. We had a really strong final few holes to with birdies from both of them to give us a five-stroke lead. Last week we were in this position, and it is great to be right back here again. I’m excited to see how the boys react tomorrow. This is the first time for Davis to hold the lead after 36 holes in a college tournament…his game is in a great place, and it will be fun to see how he competes tomorrow!”

Johnson put together a sensational day on the links to begin his tournament, rounding out the first round of play with a 4-under 67 before adding a 5-under 66 to match his career-best round of golf. Johnson’s first nine began with two birdies and seven even scores to head into the back nine 2-under. The redshirt junior followed the same path into the final round of the course, adding two more red marks to finish the course 4-under. The second round began on a high note, starting things off with birdies in three of his first six holes. A bogey brought him back to 2-under heading into the back half of the course as Johnson turned up the intensity with three more red marks to jump seven spots on the leaderboard and own sole possession of first place.

Jimenez was on his game at Aldarra after claiming the Palouse Collegiate title earlier in September. Jimenez began the tournament with a birdie on the first hole he saw and tallied two more over the next three holes on the first and second hole. The Madrid, Spain native tacked on one more red mark to finish his first nine holes, 4-under. Over the back half of the course, Jimenez added a pair of birdies and bogeys to settle into eighth place 4-under. It was a similar story in the sound round, beginning with a birdie and concluding the next 18 holes, 4-under. The sophomore is just one stroke behind Johnson at 8-under with a share of second place.

Brandon Robison also used a pair of similar rounds of golf to find himself slotted into a tie for 23rd. The first 18…
