Tempe to Texas – Men’s Golf Visits Land of 20K Sun Devil Alumni

FORT WORTH, TX – The Sun Devil men’s golf program heads to Fort Worth to play in the Ben Hogan Collegiate Invitational at Colonial Country Club Sep. 30-Oct. 1. ASU is eager for a golden finish after second place in Illinois last weekend.

PGA TOUR UNIVERSITY RANKINGS

Preston Summerhays is ranked No. 1 on the list of rising seniors eligible for PGA TOUR University in 2024-25. Josele Ballester is right behind him, ranked at No. 2. Both Sun Devils, alongside the entirety of NCAA golf, will compete to be ranked first at the end of the season for a chance to earn a PGA Tour card. 

COURE HISTORY

Shady Oaks Country Club was opened in 1958 by Marvin Leonard. With golf legend Ben Hogan opposed to the project, Leonard continued on with the construction of the course. Redesigned in 1995, the course maintains its original layout located in the west hills of Fort Worth. Surrounded by 100-year-old oak trees, Shady Oaks offers rolling bent grass fairways that lead up to bent grass greens. The par-71, 6,855 yard course is one of the best in Texas, and even hosted the 2008 U.S. Senior Amateur Championship.

LAST TIME HERE

At last year’s Ben Hogan Collegiate, ASU took home a 13-under third place finish, shooting a 827 (272-275-280). Preston Summerhays finished tied for 14th at 2-under while Josele Ballester finished tied for 30th at 2-over.

LAST WEEKEND

U.S. Amateur champion Josele Ballester checked another box with his first collegiate win in strong fashion at the 18th annual Olympia Fields Illini Invitational. Ballester matched the tournament record with a 10-under 200 (64-66-70). Georgia Tech at  12-under 828 (279-277-272), opped ASU by one stroke as the Sun Devils shot 11-under 829 (273-276-280).

SUN DEVIL MEDALISTS UNDER MATT THURMOND

Josele Ballester became the 11th Sun Devil (23 times) to win an individual title in a team tournament in nine seasons under Matt Thurmond (2016-present) when he won the Illini Invitational in September.
