Tight Contest Ends In 4-3 Loss For Golden Bears
WOODSIDE – Despite a solid start Thursday at Menlo Country Club, the California men’s and women’s golf teams fell to Stanford 4-3 in the fifth edition of the Big Match.
Cal’s pairings of Ziqin (Eric) Zhou and Jieming Yang, Kuangyu (Tony) Chen and Adora Liu and Daniel Heo and Claudia Lara Miravitlles earned match victories, but the Golden Bears weren’t able to make it four wins in five tries over their rivals in the annual event.
Yang and Zhou were the first of the seven competing pairs to finish, earning a 2&1 victory. After Stanford claimed the next two points, Liu and Chen – who played outstanding from the outset and led comfortably throughout the day – sealed a 3&2 win to tie it 2-2. Chen, playing in his third career Big Match, earned his first win in the process.
Two-time Big Match veteran Heo and Cal women’s golf freshman Miravitlles took in Cal’s final point of the day after leading 2UP through 16 holes.
