No. 5 Illini Ready for Windon Memorial Classic


LAKE FOREST, Ill. – The Fighting Illini men’s golf program, ranked No. 5 in the latest Bushnell/Golfweek Division I Coaches Poll, faces its third test of the early season Sunday-Monday, Sept. 29-30, at the Windon Memorial Classic, hosted by Northwestern at Conway Farms Golf Club.

THE SETTING

The Windon Memorial Classic will be contested on the Par-71, 7,432-yard Conway Farms Golf Club in Lake Forest, Ill. Opened in 1991, Conway Farms is an award-winning Tom Fazio course designed around Scottish links golf traditions. Over the years, the venue has hosted several premier events including three BMW Championships in 2013, 2015 and 2017. In addition to the U.S. Junior Amateur (1998) and Western Amateur (2009), the course also hosted the 1997 Men’s NCAA Championship, and the 2006 Big Ten Championship.

TOURNAMENT FORMAT

The 54-hole tournament will be played over two days with 36 holes set for Sunday, followed by the final 18 on Monday. Sunday will open with a shotgun start beginning at 8:30 a.m. CT. Tuesday’s finale will begin with tee times off Nos. 1 and 10 beginning at 7:55 a.m. CT.

THE FIELD

The tournament field features 16 programs highlighted by seven teams ranked or receiving votes in the coaches poll. The No. 5 Illini will face No. 13 Arizona, No. 25 Pepperdine, and four programs receiving votes: Kansas, Michigan State, Notre Dame, and Purdue. The rest of the field includes Augusta, East Tennessee State, Houston, Indiana, Kentucky, Marquette, host Northwestern, South Florida, and UC Davis.

The Windon Memorial Classic is new to the Illini schedule this year. No members of the Illini roster have previously played in the event.
