Hamish Murray shot an even-par 72 in the final round to close in a tie for 12th while leading the Nebraska men’s golf team at the Badger Invitational in Verona, Wis., on Tuesday.
Murray, a senior from Sydney, Australia, ended the 54-hole tournament at the University Ridge Golf Course at 215 (-1) to secure his third consecutive top-25 individual finish to open the season.
Rudy Sautron added a solid finish with a 73 (+1) to end the tournament in a tie for 15th at even-par 216. It was the second top-15 finish of the young season for the sophomore from Reunion Island, France.
Murray and Sautron helped the Huskers battle to a seventh-place finish in a 16-team field at Wisconsin. The Big Red closed with a three-round total of 873 (+9), including a final-round 298.
Evan McDermott contributed to Nebraska’s team score in all three rounds, ending the tournament at 222 (+6), including a final-round 78 to to tie for 36th.
Junior Quinn Yost put together Nebraska’s third-best round on Tuesday with a 75 (+3) to finish in a tie for 53rd at 226 (+10). Freshman Brodie Cunningham rounded out the Husker lineup at 228 (+12) in a tie for 63rd in the 90-player field
Northern Illinois claimed the team title with a three-round score of 855 (-9), three shots better than Long Beach State and the hosts from Wisconsin, which tied for second at 858 (-6). Illinois State, Memphis and Washington State closed in a three-way tie for fourth at 870 (+6), three strokes in front of Nebraska.
Washington State’s Sam Renner took medalist honors with a 207 (-9) with a two-stroke win over Felix Krammer from Northern Illinois and Wisconsin’s William Harned at 209 (-7).
Nebraska returns to action at the Quebein Cup in Greensboro, N.C., Oct. 14-15.
