Golden Bears Are Two-Time Reigning Tournament Champions
BERKELEY – The California men’s golf team will host the 20th annual Alister MacKenzie Invitational at Meadow Club in Fairfax on Monday and Tuesday. Cal is the two-time reigning tournament champion, having ran away with both the 2022 and 2023 team titles. The Golden Bears have won or shared the team title at the MacKenzie 13 times in its 19-year history dating back to 2002.
Seven Bears will play in the two-day, 54-hole tournament, which gets started Monday with 36 holes of continuous play starting at 8 a.m. PT with a shotgun start. Tuesday’s third-round pairings will be determined by results from the first two rounds of play. Live scoring is available via Golfstat.
Graduate transfer Wenliang Xie will play as the Bears’ top seed at the MacKenzie after tying for 28th with an even-par 218 in The Tindall, Cal’s season-opening tournament. He’ll be joined by freshman Matthew Miyamoto and senior Charlie Berridge – both of whom played in The Tindall – as well as Sihao Cong and Papon Sawatyanon, who will make their stroke-play season debuts. Cong, who missed his entire freshman year with an injury, made his Cal debut at the annual Big Match on Sept. 26. Daniel Heo – who tied for sixth individually with a personal collegiate-low 54-hole score of 206 at The Tindall – and freshman Kai Hirayama will play as individuals. It will be Hirayama’s Cal debut.
Cal earned a fourth-place finish at The Tindall on Sept. 23-24, shooting 13-under-par 839. The Bears were then narrowly edged by rival Stanford, 4-3, in the annual Big Match two days later at Menlo Country Club.
