CLEMSON, S.C. — The Clemson men’s golf team will open play in the Barbara Nicklaus Cup at famed Muirfield Village in Dublin, Ohio on Monday, October 7. Clemson, Charlotte, Florida and host school Ohio State will compete in the match play event at the site of the PGA Tour’s Memorial Tournament.
Both the Clemson men’s team and the women’s team will compete for their respective team championships in the two-day tournament. Both teams will play three match play events, one each against Charlotte, Florida and Ohio State over Monday and Tuesday.
This will be Clemson’s third appearance in the Barbara Nicklaus Cup. Clemson has won the championship twice in rain impacted tournaments. Clemson halved Ohio State and defeated Georgia in 2018, then beat Ohio State and Duke in 2019.
Clemson has not lost a competition in team match play since 2006. In addition to the results in the Barbara Nicklaus Cup, Clemson won both of its matches in winning the 2021 ACC Tournament in Atlanta, wins over NC State and Florida State. Clemson is 5-0-1 in team match play since 2006.
All four teams will play three matches during the Barbara Nicklaus Cup, two on Monday and one on Tuesday. The Tigers will face Charlotte on Monday morning then Florida in the afternoon. Clemson will complete its play on Tuesday afternoon against Ohio State.
Each team will have six competitors in each team match. The Tigers will take a lineup that includes three seniors, two freshmen and a junior.
Leading the way will be red-shirt senior Kian Rose, who has a 71.50 stroke average so far this year to lead the team. Senior Andrew Swanson, who finished a team best 18th at the NCAA National Tournament last year, also will be in the lineup. He has a 73.00 average so far this year. Senior Sean Curran will make his first appearance of the year in the Tigers lineup. He has played seven tournaments in his career.
Two freshman from North Carolina also will be the in the lineup. Colin Salema has the second best stroke average on the team at 72.17, while Rich Wills is fourth with a 73.00 average.
Lucas Augustsson, a transfer from East Carolina, will be the only junior in the Clemson lineup. He has a 73.17 stroke average for two tournaments.
Clemson’s history in match play tournaments dates to 1996 when Clemson played in the Rolex Match Play in LaQuinta, Calif. Clemson’s all-time record in match play tournaments is 21-11-1.
