SOUTH BEND, Ind. – The Washington men’s golf team slogged through a tough opening day of the Fighting Irish Classic at Warren Golf Course on Sunday, ending the second round in 15th at 34 shots over par.
“It was a rough day for us, the scores don’t lie,” head coach Alan Murray said. “We didn’t play well enough as a team and we need to be scrappier, tougher and much better.”
Finn Koelle ended the day as UW’s top finisher, sitting in a tie for 37th at six-over. After posting a four-over 75 in round one, the German international responded with a 71 in the second round, shooting a pair of birdies and 13 pars.
Amilkar Bhana led the Huskies after the first round, shooting firing three birdies en route to a three-over 73. However, Bhana shot six shots over par in the second round to come in at nine-over, tied for 58th.
Among those tied with Bhana is Abel Derksen, who followed up a 74 in the opening round with a 75 in round two for his 149. Brock Maulding shot six-over and four-over, respectively, for a +10 150, while Drew Warford finished the day 19-shots over par.
“That was a day to forget but a pill we must swallow,” said Murray. “We have one more round to go tomorrow so let’s see if we can respond.”
Washington will tee off for round three beginning at 6:20 a.m. PT. A link to live scoring can be found above and at GoHuskies.com.
