Renner Leads Cougars During First Day at Oregon State Invitational

CORVALLIS, Ore. (Oct. 7, 2024) – Junior Sam Renner fired back-to-back rounds of 4-under par, 67, to lead Washington State during the first day of play at the Oregon State Invitational Monday at the par-71, 7,384-yard Trysting Tree Golf Club.

Through the first 36 holes, the Cougars are in sixth place a 4-over, 572. After starting the day at 4-over in the first round, WSU bounced back and shot an even-par, 284, in the afternoon. Host Oregon State leads the field at 10-under, followed by UC Irvine and Kansas City, both at -5.

Renner was in control all day, firing the low-round of the morning at 67 and followed that up with a bogey-free afternoon for another 67. Taking advantage of his length on the long Trysting Tree course, Renner was 6-under on the par-5’s Monday, leading the field in that category. Renner continues his strong play dating back to winning last week’s Badger Invitational in Wisconsin, as over his last five rounds the WSU junior is 17-under par, breaking par in each round. Renner enters Tuesday’s final 18 holes in second place overall, two strokes off the lead. Ironically, he was in the same position last week in Wisconsin before winning the event by two shots.

Graduate student Jakob Chicoyne rebounded from a three-over, 74, in the first round to record four birdies against one bogey for a 3-under, 68, to finish his first 36 holes at even-par, 142, tied for 14th overall. Chicoyne was 4-under through 13 holes before a bogey on the par-5, 14th, led to his only blemish on the afternoon.

Freshman Dylan Burcham shot rounds of 74-74 and sits tied for 50th at 6-over, 148, following Monday’s two rounds. Burcham struggled to find his groove as he posted only four birdies over the first 36 holes. Two Cougars are tied for 57th overall as redshirt-sophomore Ben Borgida and senior Drayton Joseph are both at 9-over, 151. Borgida opened the day with a 2-over, 73, before posting a 7-over, 78, in the afternoon. Joseph went 76-75 in his first two rounds Monday.

The round of the day belonged to freshman Tate Bruggeman, who is playing as an individual. Bruggeman followed his opening-round of 1-under, 70, with a 5-under, 66,…
