Sam Renner Wins Title, Cougars Seventh at Oregon State Invitational

CORVALLIS, Ore. (Oct. 8, 2024) – Washington State junior golfer Sam Renner captured his second-consecutive tournament title in as many weeks with a three-stroke victory at the 2024 Oregon State Invitational Tuesday at the par-71, 7,384-yard Trysting Tree Golf Club.

As a team, the Cougars finished seventh after a final-round score of 7-over, 291, giving WSU a three-round score of 11-over, 863. UC Irvine captured the team title at 4-under, 848, two strokes better than host Oregon State and six strokes ahead of Boise State.

For the second-straight week, Renner came from behind to capture the title. Much like last week at Wisconsin where Renner entered the final 18 holes two strokes out of the lead, he did so again in Corvallis, posting a final-round score of 2-under, 69, to post a three-shot win over Oregon State’s Rylan Johnson, the 36-hole leader. After beginning the round with bogeys on two of the first three holes, Renner found his groove over the next 10 holes, recording five birdies to get to -2 with five holes remaining. He parred-out to secure his second collegiate individual title.

As he did all week, Renner continued to crush the par-5 holes, going two-under for the day and leading the field for the week at -8. As a team, WSU led the field in par-5 scoring a 15-under par. Renner’s title capped a two-week stretch that has seen the junior post six-straight rounds under par, and his 19-under par over his last two tournament. He becomes WSU’s fifth men’s golfer to win multiple tournament titles, and first to do so in the same season.

Graduate student Jakob Chicoyne entered the day even-par and tied for 14th before posting a 6-over, 77, to finish in a tied for 36th. Starting on Hole 7, Chicoyne 6-over after 11 holes before finishing with 7-straight pars to end his round. Redshirt-sophomore Ben Borgida fired an even-par, 717, on his final round, mixing a birdie and bogey with 16 pars for a three-round score of 9-over, 222, tied for 50th.

Also tied for 50th was Cougar freshman Dylan Burcham, who posted a 3-over, 74, for the third-straight round to finish a 9-over, 222. Burcham’s round included three birdies and 10 pars. Senior Drayton Joseph concluded his final 18 holes with a 6-over, 77, giving him a three-round score of 15-over, 228, tied for 66th overall.
